Welsh Government has a commitment towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020. The drive towards a low carbon economy is underway and it's estimated that the wood fuel industry could potentially be worth £1 billion to the economy and create more than 15,000 jobs across the UK.
Wood fuel is a bulky commodity and particularly firewood logs and wood chips are more efficiently used the closer harvesting and processing is to the point of use. As a result, producing wood fuels creates local opportunities for job creation, including foresters, farm workers, woodland consultants and wood fuel processors. Also, the development of a thriving wood fuel sector in Wales will have a major impact on jobs in associated parts of the supply chain, such as haulage, retail, design/installation/maintenance of equipment, and the service industries that support such businesses.
