Welcome to Robert Luxton our new Field Officer
Robert has a background in ecology, land management and biomass having studied and worked at the Wales Biomass Centre, Cardiff University. During his time at the centre he acted as Field Manager for a variety of different projects growing and assessing energy crops such as Willow, Miscanthus, Arundo and Reed Canary Grass in field trials across Wales and the Marches. Since 2006 Robert has also been developing his own business that grows and supplies live willow to a variety of customers, from engineers and schools to landscapers and gardeners.
Rob says, "Woodfuel Wales provides a fantastic opportunity for its members to promote and develop their businesses and for the public to realise the full benefits of food fuel for themselves and our environment. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone involved and to driving forward a positive future for wood fuel"

No Tacho Grounds operator for 2 weeks
Woodfuel Wales Member Seymour Prior had to leave his 3.5 tonne trailer at home whilst awaiting Tachograph installation into his Landrover. There has been a clampdown by police in mid Wales recently and our members are especially vulnerable as many will not realise that they can be over the weight limit. Please check to make sure that you are staying within the law. Tacho installation costs about £1,500. Fines for breaking the law can be £1,500. DONT GET CAUGHT OUT!

Ancient woodland record updated to help protect sites

An inventory of Wales' ancient woodlands is to be updated to ensure all sites are protected.
It will be the first time the list has been updated in 30 years and new technology means it will be more accurate.
It will identify former ancient woodlands that have since been planted with conifer trees to satisfy the demand for timber.
The Ancient Woodland Inventory may help restore them to their natural state.
The centuries-old woodlands, which date back to at least 1600, support many species of plants and wildlife that depend on the evolving environments created by dead and dying wood and broken sunlight.
Around 14% of Wales is covered in woodland according to the Forestry Commission Wales.
It said the updated inventory will guide decisions by organisations to remove non-native trees from some ancient woodlands and replace

Sweden Now Uses More Biomass and Wood Pellets Than Oil
Bioenergy represented 31.7% of the final energy use, compared to 30.8% oil, according to preliminary Swedish Energy Agency statistics presented by the Swedish Bioenergy Association (Svebio).

Consultation on the green paper On Forest Protection and Information in the EU: Preparing forests for climate change
The objective of this consultation is to get feedback from the general public on what the public knows about This green paper raises a series of questions relevant to developing options for future forest protection and information in the EU under a changing climate. The responses from EU institutions, MS, EU citizens and other interested stakeholders will inform and guide Commission considerations regarding any additional action at EU level to better prepare EU forests for climate change, and enhance the fulfilment of their functions. It may also provide input for discussions concerning the possible update of the EU Forest Strategy on climate related aspects
