Pellet Storage and Delivery

Arrangements for storing pellets will depend on how they are supplied. For small appliances such as room heating stoves, pellets may be bought in bags and manually loaded into the stove hopper every few days. Bags may be 20kg plastic sacks, or 500kg bulk bags and can be stored anywhere sheltered from rain and moisture. This is convenient but costly.

Pellets are considerably cheaper when bought in bulk and delivered by a tanker truck. This requires a hopper, silo or bunker for storage of at least 5 tonnes of pellets and is the best solution for boilers. The pellet store can either be inside the house or separate. The pellets are transported to the boiler using a feed system consisting of a flexible auger inside a tube. Various precautions are required to minimise dust and fire risk.

Pellet Delivery In countries such as Sweden and Austria pellets can be delivered in sacks of 20kg on a pallet, in bulk bags of between 500-800kg, or in bulk in the same way as oil (in which case the pellets are blown into the silo). Pellets can be collected by the customer in bulk or by the bag. Collection of pellets by the bag from local hardware and DIY stores is common in the USA where the use of pellet burning stoves is more widespread than the use of pellet boilers.

In the UK pellets are available by the bag and in some areas by bulk tanker. Pellets bought by the bag are considerably more expensive and more handling of the pellets is required. Several suppliers are developing distribution systems through existing networks such as coal merchants.
