What's right for you?

Open log fires are beautiful to look at - but inefficient. Most of the heat goes up the chimney.
We are all familiar with log stoves or wood burners, which are a more efficient option. You can also get log and pellet boilers to provide heat and hot water for domestic buildings, and these can be much more efficient and automated.

There are three main types of wood fuel:

• Logs - for fireplaces, stoves and boilers
• Pellets - for stoves and boilers
• Wood chip - for larger boilers

Briquettes, which are made of compressed sawdust (like large pellets) can be burnt in place of logs in stoves.

The choice of fuel, together with the way it is burned, will depend on a number of issues including the amount of space you have, availability of fuel locally, how automated you want the system to be etc.

On a larger scale for business users, there are also Energy Supply Companies which will supply a heating system and run it for you - charging you for the energy you use in the same way as any other utility company.
