The Woodfuel Wales Quality Assurance Manual

In collaboration with HETAS, WFW has produced an essential business tool for log processors. The quality manual is designed to help improve not only the quality of firewood products but also the manufacturing process and the relationship each producer has with his customers. We believe the new manual will help our members to produce a more consistent and reliable product and build consumer confidence by offering an informative and transparent service.

Quality manual cover
The manual follows a process that is set out in four clear stages. These stages are designed to allow all log processors, no matter how developed or sophisticated their systems are, to follow a pathway towards a successful and growing business.

Set out as clear and comprehensive policies and procedures that deal with all aspects of the firewood business, the manual also contains valuable information, guidance and a full set of ready to use data sheets to allow accurate records to be kept. The document is intended to be a flexible tool that processors can choose to change to suit their own business.

The manual follows a pathway that leads to a high quality product delivered through a high quality service. The natural conclusion of the process is that log processors are able to consistently produce low moisture content firewood that meets the requirements of HETAS Quality Assured Fuel QAF. At reaching this level our members will then be able to apply to HETAS for full QAF certification.
WFW Member Keith Blacker of Edistone Ltd
WFW currently has 3 full QAF certified log producing members including Keith Blacker of Edistone Ltd (pictured below) and has many more working with the manual to achieve their business potential. WFW intend to encourage as many of our members as we can to adopt an appreciation on what quality means for the wood fuel sector and to start taking advantage of the quality manual.

HETAS & QAF

HETAS are the official body recognised by Government to approve biomass and solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services including the registration of competent installers and servicing businesses.

HETAS share with Woodfuel Wales a commitment towards the production of high quality wood fuel. Low moisture wood will burn efficiently thus saving money and safeguarding against damage to appliances and chimneys caused by burning wet wood. In recognition of these problems HETAS have developed an assurance scheme to certify wood fuels. The scheme is called the 'Quality Assured Fuel' QAF (Previously called Solid Biomass Assurance Scheme SBAS) and has been formulated in accordance with European wood fuel standards.

In the field of wood energy there are 3 standards that we feel are significant.
