Supply options

A dependable source of consistently good quality fuel is critical for reliable operation of a wood chip boiler. There are three main options for obtaining wood fuel:

Energy Service Company
So-called ESCo's contract to supply heat to the customer at an agreed price. Typically, they provide fuel, operation and maintenance as part Supply optionsof the contract and bill the customer for heat supplied rather than fuel delivered. This reduces the risk and effort required for the customer. In some cases the heating plant is owned by the customer, and in others the ESCo also owns the boiler and leases it to the customer. This approach is well proven in Scandinavia but fairly new in the UK although there are already several established including at least two in Wales.

Fuel supply contract
A more 'hands-on' approach is for the heat user to source woodfuel from local contractors. This provides more flexibility in pricing but requires careful attention to contract details to ensure reliability and quality of supply. Suppliers generally deliver the fuel ready chipped to a specified size and moisture content and may be paid by load or energy content. Suppliers include local forestry owners and contractors, sawmills and fuel supply co-operatives.

Self supply
When a heat user has access to their own forestry or co-product (sawdust, slabwood, offcuts, etc) they may opt to provide their own fuel. This places the onus for successful operation with the heating plant owner and requires facilities for wood handling, chipping, storage and transport. However, if these exist there is good potential for cost savings, especially where the fuel processing can form part of a wider forestry operation.
