Wood fuel costsDry Wood burnt in an efficient stove or boiler can be a very cost-competitive fuel, with the less processed forms such as logs and chips typically undercutting all other domestic fuels. Buying in bulk and seasoning yourself will UNDOUBTEDLY reduce the costs. The downside is that the equipment to burn them is usually more expensive than that for fossil fuels. However, with the recent introduction of the RHI to help recover these capital costs the scales are more balanced. Oil and electricity prices are very volatile whereas woodfuel costs are more stable and may be fixed in long-term contracts. Another big advantage for wood fuel is that it is best sourced locally to be cost effective, ensuring that money spent on fuel stays local rather than going to offshore petrochemical multinationals. SOLIFTEC have produced this calculator which allows you to compare the costs of heating using various different ways. It appears to base its wood fuel figure based on wood at 25% moisture content. But you should not be looking at purchasing firewood by the tonne. WFW are working with SOLIFTEC to upgrade the calculator to use the better "Cubic Meter" measure and enabling different moisture contents to be included in the calculation. Low Carbon Cairngorns have provided thiscomparison - the cost data is out of date but it helps with a basic understanding....well mine anyway!! |
