Woodland managementThe landscape we see today is a result of hundreds of years of management, the woodlands having survived as a result of their value to man. They were managed, mostly using coppice systems, to provide fuels and other materials, mainly for local use. Efficient management benefits biodiversity by creating glades where flora and fauna, such as flowers and butterflies can thrive. The eco-systems that exist in these woods today depend on continued management for their survival. Many of these woodlands, especially the smaller ones, are no longer managed because they no longer provide any economic benefit to their owners. Extracting firewood and other wood products can provide income to encourage their continued management. |
